Life

Taking control.

Sometimes things aren’t clear right away. That’s where you need to be patient and persevere and see where things lead. – Mary Pierce

In a previous post, I wrote about our decision to homeschool both of our daughters, and why it’s one of the biggest decisions we’ve made in our lives, but here’s a little more on that.

Last year was the first year both of our daughters were in traditional school, but something didn’t feel right, there were signs and we certainly couldn’t ignore them.

We live in a rural community with small traditional schools, but the signs still found us. We received, at minimum, 20 signs throughout the 2022/2023 school year, when reflecting on this, it’s more like 30+ signs.

It was May when we started talking about homeschooling our girls, speaking with friends who were homeschooled and are now homeschooling their kids. It became more apparent when my heart was longing to spend more time with them each day. An hour in the morning and a couple of hours in the evening wasn’t enough time. It was hurting my heart.

Don’t get me wrong, this has been a major shift in our family dynamic and it came with some emotional challenges for all of us, but as we find our groove, the girls are absolutely thriving. That being said, we are finding some gaps and differences in what each child learned – same teacher for K/1, but they both came out of their year with big gaps.

I wouldn’t change our decision. I will step up for our girls, in whatever way it is, to ensure their needs are being met. Whether it’s a day trip to a new playground and beach, a picnic in the yard, a shopping trip or movie night, signing up as their soccer coach, or it’s as simple as giving them the extra hugs and kisses that they want.

Our children are our lives. They do everything with us, and there are many reasons why they do, but they’ve all lead to a very fulfilling, loving life that we are in control of.
