As the morning dew settles into the grass, the rooster crows in the distance at our barn, waking us around 6-6:30. Some mornings, it’s my husband and I up first, sipping water and stretching quietly while the girls are still in dreamland. Other days, our oldest is the first one to bounce out of bed, you can find our little bookworm reading the newest Nancy Drew book from our local library.
Whoever stirs first, our mornings always start the same way: with the rhythm of chores. We head outside to feed the animals, collect eggs, and make sure everyone on the homestead is cared for before we turn to breakfast. The view is always beautiful, sometimes boots are muddy, the air is chilly, and there are often mismatched pajamas tucked into rubber boots…but it’s grounding in the best way.
After chores, the kitchen becomes the heart of our morning. Breakfast is simple but nourishing, and once dishes are washed and counters wiped down, we shift into homeschool rhythm. Books are opened, projects picked up, and our day begins to take shape.
But what ties it all together for us isn’t just the doing, it’s the grounding practices that weave through our morning.
On days I wake before everyone else, I treasure that quiet time. I light an incense stick, set a few crystals on my desk, and take a few breaths to tune into my body. Sometimes I pull a card and journal what comes up. Other times, I simply sip water with the intention of clarity and calm.
When the girls are awake, they charge their crystals, pick their outfit for the day, and typically head outside to ground and burn off their morning energy.
For us, the ritual of morning isn’t about perfection or following a strict formula. It’s about rhythm. The animals need feeding, the children need breakfast, and our family needs a moment to center ourselves before the day takes over. Crystals, breathwork, and a little cacao (okay, sometimes a lot) help us anchor that rhythm in something more meaningful than just “getting things done.”
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that your morning sets the tone for your whole day. You don’t need a homestead, a deck of cards, or a collection of crystals to begin, just a willingness to slow down and choose intention.
What does your morning ritual look like? I’d love to hear how you set the tone for your day.
